The Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT) – A Truly Dynamic Group of Professional Women

OWIT is a worldwide non-profit organization that focuses on helping

 women develop and execute global trade opportunities.

I had the pleasure of attending the OWIT Spring Board Meeting held in Washington DC this year.  In attendance were members from not only all over the U.S. but also from other countries who came as representatives from their respective chapters, as I had done for the NY Chapter where I serve as the Vice President.

Notably, we have a new U.S. chapter – OWIT Utah – which is a group of experienced and energetic leaders in the Utah business community.  OWIT Cairo has also returned as an active chapter which I personally thought was fantastic news given all of the changes that the country and its people have undergone over the last couple of years.

Other exciting developments include solid prospects for new chapters in London and India, growing membership within our newly formed “Virtual Members” group, and an OWIT partnership with WEConnect, which is an international organization that certifies women-owned businesses.

2012 Export Reform Event Tonight!

Come learn about President Obama’s Export Control Reform Initiative which is described as being a common sensed approach to overhauling the nation’s aged export control system.

The Administration has determined that fundamental reform of the current system is necessary to enhance our national security by (i) focusing resources on the threats that matter most, (ii) increasing inter-operability with our Allies, and (iii) strengthening the U.S. defense industrial base by reducing incentives for foreign manufacturers to design out and avoid using U.S. parts and components.

Under Secretary Hirschhorn was appointed by President Barack Obama to be an Under Secretary of Commerce, heading the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), on March 29, 2010. Mr. Hirschhorn was sworn in April 2, 2010.Prior to his appointment, Mr. Hirschhorn was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Winston & Strawn LLP. Mr. Hirschhorn oversees the Commerce agency that advances U.S. national security, foreign policy and economic objectives by ensuring an effective export control and treaty compliance system and by promoting U.S. strategic technology leadership.

OWIT-NY Event – Preparing for the Customs Brokers Exam - Jan. 12th 6 PM

When merchandise is imported in to the United States certain information regarding the product together with the payment of customs duties is required. While an importer may do this paper work itself, it is the more typical case that it hires a Customs Brokers to file this information with the government.

As customs brokers are the intermediary between the importer and the government it has a dual set of obligations. One is to the importer, as the broker is working as its agent under a power of attorney, and the second is to the government through whom it is licensed.

Customs brokers receive their licenses after passing a lengthy exam and successfully passing a background check. This upcoming program will provide an overview of how to prepare for the Spring exam.

• Free Trade Agreement
• Customs Valuation
• Examination of merchandise, prohibited and restricted merchandise
• Temporary importation under bond, marking of imported merchandise

OWIT-NY Wine Tasting Event This Thursday!

As Vice President to the OWIT-NY Board, I’d like to invite you to kick off 2011 with the New York Chapter of the Organization of Women in International Trade as we host a private wine tasting at the popular Morrell Wine, a premier wine and spirits store in Rockefeller plaza.

The evening will consist of a presentation and wine tasting of 6 wines (a mixture of red, white and dessert) from 6 different emerging wine-producing countries. During the tasting presentation there will be a selection of Murray’s cheeses and breads to complement the wines.

Join us to taste these international wines and cheeses and combine the satisfaction of working in international trade and the educational experience of understanding emerging wine markets.

This week OWIT-NY is having its final program of the Spring season with Officer Kevin McCabe from our local port. Having met the very friendly and knowledgeable Mr. McCabe last fall while taking a tour of, and on, his turf, namely, the Port of New York/Newark, I found his wealth of knowledge and easy going nature a welcoming personality at US Customs.
